What Is Botox?: A Guide for Rookies

by The Trendsetters

Let’s get something straight off the top.  Botox is a trademarked brand of this thing called a neurotoxin.  When someone says, “I need some Botox”, they are talking about the Allergan brand of a neurotoxin called botulinum

If you go to Dr. Google and search “neurotoxin”… it will scare you.  Don’t do that just yet.  At least until you read our article where we will describe it and how it might be able to help you.

A neurotoxin is a broad class of chemicals.  A neurotoxin has the capability to cause damage to cells/human tissue. Everything from alcohol to lead to botulinum are neurotoxins.  The key word here, particularly in the case of botulinum, is capability.

If administered incorrectly, a neurotoxin such as Botox can cause side effects such as muscle weakness and drooping in or near the area of injection.  But when done correctly…

BENEFITS OF NEUROTOXINS

Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport (which is the brand produced by a company called Galderma) can be a core part of an aesthetic regimen that pays big benefits.  A neurotoxin can treat forehead wrinkles, crows feet around the eyes and general sagging in other parts of the face.  Some aesthetic, wellness and primary care facilities also use neurotoxins to treat sweaty underarms (okay, not the sexiest phrase we’ve ever used but we needed to go there.  Wipe the visual out of your mind in 3…2…1).

So, what should you look for in a med spa near you that provides Botox, Dysport and the like?  The cheapest price shouldn’t be at the top of the list if you want the best results.  The price of Botox, as an example, can range anywhere from $9.00 to up to $11.00 or more per unit, not including any specials you might find.

That said, you are talking about a roughly $50-$60 overall procedure cost difference for 30 units.  We can’t speak for everyone’s financial situation, but the cost difference can be worth it if the provider delivering the services is reputable, experienced and customer focused.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

  1. Does the provider ask you what your goals are?
  2. Do they chart the proposed process based on your goals?
  3. Are they transparent with the overall cost of the procedure?
  4. Do they treat the process like a medical procedure (vs. a cosmetic procedure)
  5. Is the provider certified and operating under the direction of a licensed healthcare professional?
